Bless This Mess (and pardon all the photos)

As I mentioned in the last post, my super-fast-needed-this-yesterday baby blanket has not gotten off to a good start. I'm still fiddling with yarn and needle size and patterns trying to get just what I want. Since I'm not getting anywhere with that, I decided to take a little bit of time to put the finishing touches on an embroidery project that has been in the works for months.

My husband's aunt has a bathroom decorated with outhouses, and while it isn't my personal style, it always catches my attention for some reason. When we visit I always find myself staring at all the outhouses while I brush my teeth! A recent trip to their house inspired me to draw up a pattern for a little wall hanging that could go in that bathroom, and this is what I came up with.

I sketched it out with a pencil and then traced over it with a Sharpie pen, then traced that onto off-white muslin with a water-soluble pen. I wanted to add so much detail and so many different types of fills that the stitching took a lot longer than I'd thought it would.

I had the stitching finished quite a while ago but procrastinated on the finishing because it was the first time I did backing and binding and I was intimidated. Turns out it wasn't as hard as I thought.

(There are a few more photos on my Flickr site if you haven't had enough!)

I would love to have this in my bathroom! It's a real masterpiece, and great to see the the project from start to finish. Lovely to see the original drawing too. (PS - my apron doesn't really work that well!!)
